Ulupwa means Family!

I view art making as an opportunity to connect with others in both a physical and spiritual way. In my ongoing Ulupwa series, I utilize free form intuitive drawing to make marks on paper, canvas, or burlap, by creating symbols and figures that are meant to reference ancestral beings and cultural narratives. My work seeks to create a coded language using symbolism by drawing from multiple reference points such as Christianity, and African traditional religion and culture. These ancestral figures came to me as a result of seeking a connection to my place of origin while being far from home. Ultimately my work seeks to find connections that transcend borders, cultures and racial divides.
