Would you believe me if I told you that the First World War ended in Southern Africa and not Europe?

I view art making as an opportunity to connect with others in both a physical and spiritual way. This project explores the often overlooked bodies that participated in the First World War in cardinal ways and made great contributions through their labour. Like many soldiers and generals, they gave their lives to ensure the success of the Allied forces. By focusing on the contributions made by these groups of African carriers who were called Tenga Tenga, I aim to revisit history’s narrative of WWI to highlight the very real and necessary work that these individuals did during the war. This project aims to bring their memory into the present through performance and photography by using WWI monuments as a guide to consider who has been remembered and who is relegated to obscurity. This ongoing project comes to life purely by the collaborative efforts of many individuals from photographers to actors, researchers and the general public's contribution to the memory of these very key individuals - the Tenga Tenga.
